CLEAN-UP DRIVE
Clean-Up Drive, whether in coastal, community, plastic-free, underwater, etc, is a voluntary activity, and a great way to create awareness that lays the groundwork for future waste-reduction efforts. A clean-up drive brings about a sense of community and responsibility to keep our homes and common areas safe and clean.
The Peers TY System Movement, in collaboration with the students of MMSU, environmental groups, eco-warriors, local governments agencies, Movement Against Plastic Pollution in Ilocos Norte, Baybay ti Norte Kooperartiba, Agent Ryan, Amianan Org, Biyaherong Ilokano Org, and concern citizens, implemented clean-up activities since 2018 to preserve the cleanliness of the environment and to reduce the effects to climate change. This is a continuous effort worked to clean up places such as coastal areas and major thoroughfares that are clogged with waste. Silts and debris clogging canals and rivers have been cleared from their origins.
By participating in a clean-up drive, citizens create results in environmental changes in their local areas. Clean-ups should serve as a catalyst for permanent changes by adopting practices (i.e. 5Rs and SB Way) that can have a profound effect on waste management in the community.
The primary goal of the action is to increase public awareness. Garbage has long been a significant issue in every town as a result of limited enforcement of RA 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. Trash continues to block water bodies, posing a risk to public health. When garbage is not properly disposed of or recycled, pests of all types invade causing havoc on homes and posing health risks.
