Year 2020-2021

     On August 4, 2020, a Tree Planting and Clean-Up Drive was held in Vintar, Ilocos Norte. The town is a potential tourist site particularly the mountain of Pallas. The place was visited by Mayor Larisa Foronda and Forester Victor Dabalos of PENRO, together with SB Members Hon. Randy Degala (Committee Chair on Tourism) and Hon. Marie Foronda (Committee Chair on Environment) along with the MLGOO of Vintar, Sir John Anthony Bareng, Tourism Operations Officer, MENRO Marlou Gapuzan and PB of Ester, Abe Agsao. Through the leadership of Mayor Foronda, they conducted clean-up drive and tree planting in partnership with several environmental groups and organizations. The mayor, together with the group, monitored and surveyed the area. It was requested that the location be studied for its conservation and preservation. Indeed, even without the sea of clouds, the location gives a stunning view of the town verdant landscape and majestic mountains.

     A Speaking Engagement with online gamers and streamers was held through a live stream last August 5, 2020. The live stream titled “Now Loading: Gamers for Nature” is a new initiative with Lier One Entertainment where gamers can support conservation efforts while doing what they love! In this series of play through fundraising live streams, local gamers come together to bring awareness to environmental issues and the needs of our environmental frontlines. People supporting these live streams were able to help in the conservation of natural habitats, resources, and provide aid for the partner communities.

      On January 29, 2021, a Kick-off Clean-Up Drive was conducted with a theme: "SIKA MAPPan agdalos AMIANAN:Matagiben Baybay, Salun-at maSalOadaC" and it is entirely volunteer-led. At the Pias Sur beach area, 19 sacks of garbage were collected. They gathered or discovered 1, 533 plastic food packaging, 246, plastic cuttlery, 181, Styro 175, plastic lids 163, paper food packaging 148, plastic drinking straws 111, glass bottles 80, fabrics 48, disposable face masks 39, rubber, sandals, and shoes 39, cigarette holders 25, diapers, cans 3, fishing gear discards, and so on in a sack.

           The collectors were the SEAblings in Action and the Marine Biology Students Society (MBSSoc) for co-sponsoring the event. Furthermore, they thanked Cong. Angelo Marcos Barba for donating the thermal scanners and gloves, Ate Kathrine Dacanay Lagustan for the pa-Siopao, and LGU-Currimao for their active participation. This activity has provided an opportunity to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, fight climate change, and improve the quality of the natural environment.

      January 30, 2021, first day of the scheduled Underwater Clean-up Drive and Day 2 of the 2021 Kick-off Clean-up Drive. This activity is the first and second days of the underwater clean-up drive, as well as the kick-off clean-up drive. In Poblacion 1, Currimao beach, 9 volunteer divers collected a total of 2 garbage bags and 9 rubber tires. Plastic Food Packaging is 70, Plastic Bottles are 19, Glass Bottles are 32, Plastic Cutlery is 3, Face Shields are 2, Clothes are 15, Diapers are 5, Sanitary Pads are 2, Sacks are 2, Broom is 1, and Tarpaulin is 1. Those who assisted included the SEAblings in action, the Currimao Divers Club (CDC), which led the event, and Cong. Angelo Marcos Barba for thermal scanners, gloves, and snacks, and to LGU-Currimao for active participation.

      January 31, 2021, second day of the scheduled Underwater Clean-up Drive                       

           February 1, 2021, third day of the Kick-off Clean-up Drive. Because of Currimao Bay's low visibility, a small amount of garbage was collected underwater. While volunteers chose to collect garbage on Maglaoi's coastal area, volunteers were able to collect 5 garbage bags and 1 rubber tire, 863 plastic food packaging, 606 Plastic Cups, 130 Plastic Bottles, 128 Plastic, 80 Plastic Drinking Straw, 74 Slippers, 63 Styrofoam, 13 Fishing Disposables, 10 Glass Bottles, 8 Plastic Cutlery, 8 Disposable Face Masks, 4 Cans, 2 Toothbrushes, and 2 Rubber Wheels. SEAblings in action, the Marine Biology Students Society (MBSSoc) for co-sponsoring the event, the Curimao Divers Club for their active participation, were among those who assisted the activity. Thermal scanners, gloves, and snacks were provided by Cong. Angelo Marcos BarbaCurrimao LGU personnel’s actively participated and assisted the project.

         April 22, 2021, Plastic Waste is Exchanged for Items at a Community Pantry in Poblacion, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, done during the Earth Day Celebration.          The picture shows the Tree Planting Activity held last March 11-15 and May 8-9, 2021 respectively, in which the participants planted five fruit-bearing seedlings. One of the most important things we get in plant trees is saving Mother Nature from anthropogenic destruction. Students from BSCHE2A, BACOMM 1A, BSA-2D, BSA-2B, BACOMM 1-A, BS in Entrepreneurship II-A, and BSCE-1A participated in the said activity.

          Last May 25 and 26, 2021, the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Climate Change takes place. This event was organized by BioLeagues Worldwide with the hashtags #isers, #bioleagues, #climatechange, #savetheplanet, and #globalwarming to highlight the importance of research tools approaches to improving effective responses to climate change. In collaboration with the International Society for Environmental Relationships and Sustainability (ISERS). Mr. Pola participated in the conference.

          On June 07, 2021, Bensen Pola, MPh, MPA, presented a paper in the 2nd Internationl Conference on Climate Change titled Being in the World: Existential Analysis of PEERS TY as an Approach to Climate Change which was approved for publication in the Turkish Journal International Publication. It was published July 27, 2019.

      December 19, 2021, MAPA webinar and outreach program spearheaded by the students of the graduate school under the course PA 221 of Bensen Pola, MPh, MPA was conducted. The webinar was an assessment of the local accomplishments of LGUs in terms of their respective projects underlying ecological awareness. The outreach program involved the LGUs of Piddig, Laoag, Batac and Pinili where distribution of goods to underprivileged families was done and distribution of seedlings.
